Your monthly plan is not monthly, and that is the whole trick
A ₹719 pack sold as a monthly plan runs for 28 days. Divide 365 by 28 and you get 13.04, so covering a year takes just over thirteen recharges — and thirteen of them only reach day 364. You pay 13 times for something called monthly, in a year that has 12 months.
That is ₹9,372.68 a year. If the same ₹719 bought a calendar month it would be ₹8,628. The difference, ₹744.68, is almost exactly one extra recharge, handed over annually by people who believe they are on a monthly plan. Nothing is hidden and nothing is illegal; the number 28 is printed on every plan. It simply does not read as thirteen payments.
TRAI addressed this back in 2022, ordering every operator to offer at least one 30-day plan voucher, one special tariff voucher and one combo voucher. The plans exist. Almost nobody buys them, which is why the communications ministry went back to the operators in December 2025 and again in March 2026 asking them to actually promote the 30-day options. If you have never gone looking, you are on a 28-day cycle.
Cost per day is the only honest comparison
Plans are priced to be hard to compare across validities. Reduce each to a daily rate and the ranking changes.

The 84-day pack is about 7% cheaper per day than the 28-day one for comparable benefits. Annual packs go lower still per day, but they are not like-for-like — check the daily data allowance and which perks are included before treating ₹9.86 a day as the same product. Longer validity also locks you in: you cannot port out mid-plan without abandoning what you paid for.
Daily data does not roll over
A 2 GB/day plan sounds like 56 GB across the cycle. It is not. The counter resets at midnight, so if you really use 1.2 GB, you throw away 0.8 GB every single day and there is no bank to draw on for the day you travel.
This is why upsells from 1.5 GB to 2 GB feel cheap and rarely pay. Check Settings, then network data usage on your phone for one real month before accepting one. What this deliberately ignores
Bundled perks. A plan carrying a streaming subscription you already pay for separately is worth more than its price suggests, and one carrying five apps you never open is worth exactly its price. No calculator can value that for you.
It also assumes you recharge on time. Let a prepaid plan lapse and incoming calls stop, then the number itself enters a grace window before it can be reallocated — a cost that does not appear in any yearly total but is the one worth avoiding.
Why DTH and broadband are counted separately here
Mixing them into one validity is a real error, and this tool used to make it. An earlier version took a single validity figure and scaled every head by 30 over it — so entering 28 days for your mobile plan also stretched DTH, broadband and OTT as though they expired in 28 days. On the default amounts that inflated the three of them by ₹1,412.57 a year.
The distinction is simple once stated. A prepaid pack expires after a count of days, wherever that lands. DTH, broadband and OTT expire on a date: bill on the 5th, next bill the 5th, twelve times a year whether the month has 28 days or 31. So the mobile head is annualised on its own validity and the rest are multiplied by 12. On the defaults that is ₹9,372.68 plus ₹19,776, or ₹29,148.68 a year — about ₹2,429 a month for household connectivity.
One thing to watch when you enter your own numbers: if a broadband plan is quarterly or an OTT subscription annual, divide it down to a monthly figure first. And if a family has SIMs on different validities, run them separately and add the yearly totals, because the annualising depends on the validity being the same for whatever you put in that one field.
