Percentage & Marks Calculator

Enter your obtained marks and the total marks; the percentage is (obtained / total) × 100. For example, 432 out of 500 is (432 / 500) × 100 = 86.40%. The total must be greater than zero — you cannot take a percentage of a zero-mark paper.

Use the Target Marks block. Enter the total marks and the percentage you want, and the required score is (target / 100) × total. For 90% of 500 that is 450 marks. If the figure you need is higher than the total — which happens when you type a target above 100% — the tool flags it as impossible rather than suggesting a score you cannot reach.

Because that almost always means a data-entry slip — usually the obtained and total marks were swapped, or a digit was mistyped. A score of 550 out of 500 is arithmetically 110%, but no exam lets you score more than the paper is worth. The tool still shows the number so you can see what you entered, but highlights it in red so the mistake is obvious instead of being copied onto a form.

Add up the marks you obtained across all subjects, then add up all the maximum marks, and divide the two totals: total obtained ÷ total maximum × 100. Enter those two sums in the Marks to Percentage block. Do not average the per-subject percentages unless every subject is out of the same maximum — a 40-mark paper and a 100-mark paper do not count equally toward an aggregate.

The arithmetic is the same everywhere, so yes — school and board exams, college internals, and semester totals all use (obtained / total) × 100. What differs between boards is grading, rounding, and how aggregates are weighted, and this tool does not apply those institution-specific rules. Treat the percentage as the raw figure and confirm your grade against your own board’s scheme.
