Every shared household eventually hits the same argument. Someone was away for ten days and wants their share reduced. The instinct on both sides is to pro-rate the whole bill by days present — twenty days out of thirty, so two-thirds of a share. That is generous to the traveller and nobody notices by how much.
The reason it is wrong is that the bill is two different kinds of cost wearing one number. The internet plan charges the same whether the flat is full or empty. The maid is paid her monthly wage regardless. Electricity, water and groceries are the only heads that actually move with who is there. Discount the fixed half for an absence and you are not sharing a cost fairly, you are transferring it.
On the default figures — ₹10,149 across three people, so ₹3,383 each — ten days away should bring the traveller to ₹2,820.50, a saving of ₹562.50. Pro-rating the entire bill instead gives them ₹2,537.25, which is ₹283.25 more discount than the arithmetic supports. Groceries are where equal splits break
Electricity has a meter and internet has a plan, so both are arguable from evidence. Groceries have neither. One person cooks every night, another eats out five nights a week, and the bill divides evenly regardless.
Households that fight about the monthly split are usually fighting about this line and blaming the utilities. If eating patterns differ sharply, the honest fix is to take groceries out of the pool and split only what the flat consumes as a unit.
What this does not handle

The rupee nobody wants, and agreeing the rules early
Three-way splits rarely divide cleanly. A ₹10,150 bill is ₹3,383.33 each, and no arrangement of whole rupees makes three equal shares. Someone absorbs the difference. It is trivially small and reliably irritating, and the arrangement that causes least friction is rotating who takes the rounding rather than letting it always fall on whoever pays the landlord.
The larger point is that an absence discount has to be agreed before the month ends, not after. A flatmate expecting ₹3,383 who is handed ₹3,664 reads the extra ₹281 as a penalty, even though it is just the other person's usage arriving where it belongs. Anyone away for a stretch reduces their own consumption and increases everyone else's share of what the household still used — that is what fairness costs here, and it lands better said in advance.
A closing caveat on the numbers: the away-days adjustment assumes a 30-day month and that consumption is roughly even across days, which it is not — a week of heavy AC use is not equal to a week in December. It is a better approximation than an equal split and a much better one than pro-rating the whole bill, but it remains an approximation. Nothing you enter here leaves your browser.
