Does the UPI transaction limit affect the settlement?

It can, for large amounts. Most banks cap UPI at ₹1 lakh per transaction with a daily ceiling, and newly linked accounts often have a lower limit for the first 24 hours. If the settlement figure exceeds your cap the transfer will fail rather than partially send, so split it across two transfers or use a bank transfer instead.

Is this only for two people?

Yes. Two people is the case where a single transfer closes the account completely, which is why the output is one line. For three or more, the number of possible transfers grows faster than the number of people and you usually want to minimise the count of transfers rather than have everyone pay everyone — a different problem that this tool does not solve.

Should I record the settlement anywhere?

The UPI transaction itself is the record, and it is a good one — timestamped, with a reference number, visible to both parties. What it does not capture is what the transfer was for. A one-line note in the payment remarks ("Goa trip settle") costs nothing and answers the question you will both have in three months. Nothing you type into this calculator is saved.

This calculator asks for the shared total and what each person paid. That is three numbers describing only two independent facts, because the two payments should already add up to the total. When they do not, the split cannot be settled with a single transfer — and the arithmetic will not tell you so unless it checks.

Say ₹3,000 was spent on a weekend trip, and you record ₹1,800 from one person and ₹600 from the other. Half of ₹3,000 is ₹1,500, so the balances come out as +₹300 and −₹900. Those should cancel. They do not — they sum to −₹600, which is exactly the ₹600 of spending nobody has been credited with. A transfer of ₹300 closes one side of the account and leaves the other short. The tool now shows that ₹600 as an unaccounted amount rather than reporting a confident settlement figure on top of an inconsistency.

In practice the missing money is almost always one of three things: cash, which never leaves a trace in anyone's app; a small item someone covered and forgot to mention; or a payment that belongs to a different split entirely. Finding it is faster than arguing about the settlement, because until it is found there is no settlement that works.

Reading the two balance figures

The balances are not amounts owed. They are how far each person sits from their fair share, and a person with a positive balance is a creditor, not a debtor — which is the opposite of what the plus sign suggests to most people at a glance.

The third row is the one people query. If one person paid the entire ₹2,400, the reflex is to ask for ₹2,400 back. But half of that spending was on their own behalf, so the correct transfer is ₹1,200. The settlement figure is always half the gap between what the two of them paid, never the full bill.

Equal is not the same as fair

This divides the total in half. That is correct for a cab, a hotel room or a shared grocery run, where both people consumed the same thing. It is wrong for the dinner where one person had two drinks and a dessert and the other had soup.

No calculator resolves that — it is a decision, not a computation. Either itemise before splitting, or agree that halving evens out across enough meals. The friction comes from one person assuming the first while the other assumes the second.

What this cannot do

Two people only. Three or more is a genuinely different problem: you want the fewest transfers that clear everyone, not everybody paying everybody, and the answer depends on the whole set of balances at once.

Before you send the transfer

Large settlements can hit a wall that has nothing to do with the arithmetic. UPI is capped per transaction and per day by your bank, and a freshly linked account is often held to a lower limit for the first day. A transfer above the cap fails outright rather than sending what it can, so for a big settlement either split it across two transfers or move it by bank transfer.

Worth adding a remark to the payment as well. The UPI record is timestamped and referenced and visible to both of you, which makes it a better record than any note either of you would keep — but it does not say what the money was for. Four words in the remarks field answers the question you will both have months later.

Then one of your three numbers is wrong, and the tool now says so with an Unaccounted Amount card rather than quietly settling anyway. This matters because the settlement is derived from the shared total: if ₹3,000 was spent but you have only recorded ₹1,800 and ₹600, the two balances come to −₹600 instead of zero, and the transfer the tool suggests leaves ₹600 sitting with nobody. Usually the cause is a payment made in cash, or one person covering something small that never made it into the tally. Add the missing payment and the mismatch disappears.

Because an equal split is not the same thing as a fair one. This tool divides the total in half, which is right when both people consumed roughly equally. It is wrong for the restaurant bill where one person had a starter and a dessert. There is no arithmetic fix for that — you either itemise before splitting, or accept the equal split as a rounding of many meals in both directions. Deciding which of the two you are doing, out loud, prevents most of the awkwardness.
