Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text — filler used to fill a layout while the real words are still being written. It looks vaguely like Latin, reads like nothing, and that is exactly the point. When you are designing a page, a slide, or an app screen, you need something in the text slots so you can judge how the design holds up: how a headline wraps, how a paragraph sits against an image, how much room a bio actually needs. If you drop real, readable copy into those slots too early, everyone in the room — you included — starts reading it and reacting to what it says instead of how the layout works. Lorem Ipsum removes that temptation by giving you text-shaped text with no meaning to snag on.

It has been doing this job for a long time. The scrambled passage traces back to a real work of classical Latin — Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC — with the words chopped and reordered until they stopped being readable Latin. The "lorem" itself is a fragment of "dolorem" (pain), left dangling when the passage was cut. Printers and typesetters have used versions of it since the 1500s to show off a typeface or a layout without a client fixating on the copy. So when you generate a block here, you are using a five-century-old trick: prose with the meaning surgically removed so the design can speak for itself.

The instinct to reach for real copy — a blog post, a paragraph of marketing text, a page of a novel — is understandable, but it backfires in a design review for a specific reason: humans can't notread. Put a coherent sentence in front of someone and their brain decodes it automatically, before they've consciously decided to. In a layout mockup that means every stakeholder starts editing the words. "Do we really say that?" "That headline is wrong." "Change tone here." None of which is what the mockup was for. The whole meeting drifts from "does this layout work" to "is this copy right," and the design questions never get answered.

Lorem Ipsum sidesteps that by being unreadable while still having the right shape. It has realistic word lengths, sentence lengths, and paragraph rhythm, so it fills space the way genuine prose will — but there's no meaning to argue about, so attention stays on the grid, the type scale, the spacing, and the hierarchy. There is a second, sneakier benefit too: placeholder text is honest about being unfinished. Real copy in a mockup can fool a client into thinking the content is done and signed off; a screen full of "lorem ipsum dolor" makes it unmistakable that words are still to come, which keeps expectations calibrated and stops half-baked copy from shipping by accident.

The three modes exist because "placeholder text" means different things in different slots. Paragraphs is the default and the one you'll reach for most: it fills body-copy areas, article layouts, and long-form content blocks with multi-sentence blocks separated by blank lines, so you can see how running text behaves down a column. Sentences is for the medium slots — a card description, a product blurb, a tooltip, a form hint, a meta description — where a full paragraph is too much but a couple of words is too little. Wordsis for the tight, precise slots: a headline, a button label, a nav item, a tag, a chip. Generating exactly the number of words you expect lets you check whether a real label of that length will fit before you've written it.

The count field (up to 100) controls how many of the chosen unit you get, so you can dial the output to the exact volume a slot needs rather than generating a wall of text and trimming. The "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" toggle is there because that opening is the canonical, instantly-recognisable beginning of the passage — leaving it on signals "this is placeholder" at a glance, which is often what you want in a shared mockup; turning it off gives you a purely random block when you'd rather not lead with the cliché. And Regenerate reshuffles the text: because the same layout can look different with a slightly different distribution of word lengths, it's worth regenerating a few times to make sure your design holds up across the natural variation real content will have.

Placeholder text is a design aid, not a content strategy, and there are moments it actively misleads. The biggest is a layout whose success depends on real content length. A card grid that looks perfect with tidy Lorem Ipsum can fall apart the moment real product names run long, or a real user writes a two-word bio where you budgeted for forty. If the content is the hard part of the design — a pricing table, a data-dense dashboard, a form with real field labels — test with realistic sample content, not lorem, or you'll design for text that will never exist. A good habit is to mock up with lorem first for the skeleton, then do a second pass with the longest and shortest real content you can imagine to stress the edges.

Two more cautions. First, never let Lorem Ipsum reach production — it's a running joke in the industry precisely because it slips through so often, turning up on live sites, in printed brochures, even in shipped apps. Because it's meaningless, spell-checkers and skim-reads miss it, so add an explicit check for "lorem" before anything goes live. Second, it's useless for anything involving actual reading comprehension or SEO: don't use it to test readability, don't leave it in pages you want indexed, and don't hand it to a translator. It fills space convincingly, and that's the entire extent of what it does — which is exactly why it's so useful when space is the only thing you're testing.

You'll occasionally see alternatives — themed filler like "bacon ipsum," "hipster ipsum," or corporate-buzzword generators — and they have their place, but there's a reason the classic Latin version remains the default. Its whole value is that it is notin a language your audience reads. English-based filler, however silly, is still readable, so it drags attention back to the words exactly the way real copy does; a stakeholder will start chuckling at the bacon references instead of studying the layout. Lorem Ipsum's pseudo-Latin sits in a sweet spot: familiar enough in texture to look like real prose, foreign enough that nobody parses it.

There's also a practical reason it wins: it's neutral. Themed filler carries a tone — jokey, snarky, on-brand for someone — that can clash with the design you're presenting or read as unprofessional to a client. Plain Lorem Ipsum has no tone at all, which is precisely what you want when the design, not the filler, is supposed to be the star. Save the novelty generators for internal fun; reach for classic lorem when the mockup is going in front of anyone whose opinion matters.

The generator is deliberately simple. It holds a fixed vocabulary of the classic Lorem Ipsum words, then samples from it to build sentences of varying length and paragraphs of varying size, so the output has the uneven, natural rhythm of real prose rather than a monotonous drone of identical-length lines. The randomness is seeded, which is a small but deliberate detail: it means the text is stable between the version rendered on the server and the version your browser shows on first load, and it only changes when you actually press Regenerate. That avoids the flicker-and-reshuffle you sometimes see on tools that randomise carelessly.

On privacy, here is the precise and honest picture. The text generation itself is 100% client-side — it runs in your browser with plain JavaScript, sends nothing to any server, and would keep working with your network disconnected. Whatever you generate stays on your machine; there is no text-processing endpoint behind this tool. What is nottrue is that the page is "fully offline" in the absolute sense: like every page on this site, it loads standard analytics and ads, which are normal web requests. So the accurate claim is narrow and real — your placeholder text is generated locally and never transmitted — rather than a blanket "nothing here ever touches the network," which wouldn't be true of any ad-supported page. For a tool that just makes dummy text, that local generation is all the privacy the job actually requires.
